This is part of a series. Are they any special challenges when writing for a series?
Keeping events and recurring characters straight is a must. I have an entire file of notes on this series, with timelines, research, character descriptions, a family tree, and a floor plan and map of the Macska family home and grounds. Each book has to have a unique plot and characters as well so readers don’t feel like they’re reading basically the same story over and over. A mermaid, medieval knights, warlocks, pirates, construction workers, cowboys… Luckily, my muse has cooperated!
Tell us about your latest book?
Two Roped and Ready is the sixth book in the Bewitching Desires series, following a family of witches, their search for mates, and their ongoing conflict with an ancient evil shifter.
Ilona Macska is the latest witch to achieve full-fledged status, meaning she’s ready for her mates. But her family’s enemy has made searching for them nearly impossible, so she spells herself to the most logical place to find eligible men and avoid the shifter—a brothel in the newly independent Republic of Texas. Not only does she get the chance to put her extensive sex ed. training to good use with a pair of cowboys, she manages to disable an outlaw.
Mix a helping of time travel with a generous dose of hot sex, a pinch of poison, and plenty of love to get another fun Macska witch adventure. Oh, did I mention the cowboys get roped???
Blurb: Witch Ilona Macska has no intention of waiting for the Fates to deliver her mates to her bed when the full moon triggers her fertility cycle. Her plan includes a trip to a nineteenth-century brothel and men lined up to find pleasure with her. But sometimes the best-laid plans don’t work so out well…
With their pasts erased, Quayde Gallagher and Paxton Campbell have searched the Republic of Texas for clues about where they come from. After the accidental rescue of Ilona from a band of outlaws, a visit with her at the town bordello sparks more than memories.
When her family’s enemy sends a tornado to destroy her, Ilona spells herself and her cowboys back home—but not before the ancient shifter poisons her. Can Quayde and PC heal Ilona with their growing love for her? And will their stolen memories return as they devote themselves to healing her?
Plotter or Pantser?
I am what I like to refer to as a “plantser.” I have a basic plot for my stories, but the characters have a tendency to take the reins once I start writing. If I don’t want to rewrite scenes, I have to let the voices lead the way! Somehow, they always seem to know the right direction…
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers trying to get published?
The best advice I have is 1) read your genre, 2) learn the craft, and 3) connect with other writers. Then write the best story you can and keep writing and learning.
What is the hardest thing about being a writer?
I think most writers would agree that figuring out how to balance our writing with our other responsibilities is one of the most difficult aspects. Rejection is tough, but not having the time we need to write is much worse.
What are you currently working on?
Between edits, I’m working on an MFM ménage sequel to the Bewitching Desires series featuring the brothel owner from Two Roped and Ready, a super hot MMMF ménage for The Sextet Presents, and an MF foodie contemporary. Argh! They’re all trying to talk to me at the same time!
What do you do when you’re not writing?
My writing brain never shuts off, but I try to fit in lots of hiking, a daily Pilates workout, and reading. I also homeschool my autistic (Aspergers) son, play nursemaid to a blind diabetic dog, and try to stay caught up with laundry and meals. I’m involved in my local RWA chapter, serving on the board, acting as PRO liaison, and critiquing for new writers.
How can you fans find you on the net?
When her fingers aren’t attached to her keyboard, Mellanie Szereto enjoys hiking, Pilates, cooking, gardening, and researching for her stories. Many times, the research partners with her other hobbies, taking her from the Hocking Hills region in Ohio to the Colorado Rockies and the Adirondacks of New York. Sometimes, the trip is no farther than her garden for ingredients and her kitchen to test recipes for her latest steamy tale. Mellanie makes her home in rural Indiana with her husband of twenty-five years and their two children, one dog, and two cats. She is a member of Romance Writers of America, Indiana Romance Writers of America, and Hearts Through History Romance Writers.
